there was a man (soldier song)

about

This is my dad’s story but could also be the story of anyone who has had to fight in a war. None of us knew that he'd been at the hell that was Dunkirk in WW2 and I only found out from his sister (who I'd never met before) about 18 years after he had died. This story of his experience helped to make sense of how his life had played out after the war.

lyrics

There was a man who as a boy had been a soldier in the war
He never talked about the time he was a soldier in the war
He never talked about the time
He never talked about the time
He never talked about the time he was a soldier in the war

And all the things he’d seen and things he’d done as a soldier in the war
He never talked about the things he’d seen and done as a soldier in the war
He never talked about the things
He never talked about the things
He never talked about the things he’d seen and done as a soldier in the war

Many years after he died I heard his story
He did not go to fight for his own glory
He was a child
He was a son
He was a brother
He was a man
He was a friend
He was a lover
He married a French girl, then divorced her
Then wed a Scots girl, through drink he lost her
He was tormented by his demons
Had seen the devil, knew his dealings
There was a man who as a boy had been to war
